Our name comes from a centuries old trail running through the eastern slopes of the Willmore Wilderness Park. We are an Indigenous owned business that offers a unique and once in a lifetime experience on horseback in the Alberta Rocky Mountains.

About Us

HISTORY & PRESENT

Curtis Hallock, owner/operator of ITA, is a third-generation outfitter. His “kâ-miķocit” or natural gift is deeply rooted in the rich history and traditions of his ancestors, who are the Mountain Métis and Aseniwuche Winewak Nation. Further to the eviction of his ancestors from Jasper when it became a national park in 1911, though a painful chapter, underscores the resilience and determination of Indigenous communities to maintain their way of life despite adversity.

The legacy of the family's connection to the land spans generations where his Indigenous roots and way of life were passed down from his mother’s line, the Delormes, as they lived in a traditional way “in the bush” until the 1960s. The approach of ITA, by offering multi-day trips modeled after traditional Indigenous ways of living, provides visitors with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rhythms of nature and connect with the land in a profound way. By embracing this lifestyle, ITA not only preserves cultural heritage but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and all living beings.

The ITA herd of horses are also multigenerational members of the Hallock family; many originated from local wild herds and their care & keep has been passed down from Curtis’ father. Today the horses are semi-wild and have open access to the wilderness, they come and go as the seasons progress, but they check in periodically and more strict management is administered in the summer months when it is time to work.

ITA's dedication to preserving Indigenous heritage and sharing it with others is a reflection of belief in the seventh generation principle. Acknowledgment that one belongs to this place but does not own it. Decisions are made based on the knowledge of the seven generations before but also thinking of the seven generations to come. It is through this that ITA not only offers adventure but also a transformative experience rooted in cultural exchange and deep connection to the natural world.
